Larry;
I already knew all that back in the 60's. I've probably forgotten more
about all that stuff than you will ever know; I'm now considered to be an
Elder Statesman in the world of pool/billiards. But, it's always nice to
hear from you and hope that you are doing well. Some people actually pay
attention to your efforts at "instruction" and I'm certain that makes you
feel good. As a matter of common decency I always try to interact to your
posts in a cordial manner; as do most of the other serious players in this
newsgroup.
Stay on your meds. Don't miss any of your counseling sessions. Continue
to use these newsgroups as distractions from your problems and you'll be all
right !!!

I'm thinking of buying a set of those Corner/Side Inserts that (supposedly)
allow a decent game of 3-Cushion Billiards to be played on a 9 ft. GoldCrown
III.
Have you ever played using them?
Could you recommend them? I know they cannot be as good as the real thing
but I'm thinking they might be adequate as a way to get started
learning
the
basic moves of 3-Cushion.
Have any idea as to where I might find a set?

Billiard balls will not work as the rails are then too low, forget it,
just buy a 3-c table and be done with it. Any thing less of that will
be seriously mickey mouse. Larry

Larry;
Thanks for replying; but ---- sometimes it's evident that you don't have the
sense God gave a Doorknob! In a substitute scenario like this one would
use regular pool balls, i.e., 2 1/4 " in diameter and 6 oz. in weight.
Use your head upon occasion !

=======================================================================
But ding dong, that is what I am trying to tell you, you dont have the
sense God gave Hogans fookin goat here, listen up she-yit fo brains
and learn sometin. I am trying to save you, from your self.
When the pool game was on 5x10's the rooms had 2 sets of rails, and
could change a pool table into a 3-c table just by swapping the
rails...When pool went to 9' tables that option stopped, because 3-c
must be played on a 10' table, and not 9 or 8, unless you have a gook
room with every one playing 4 ball straight rail. When you make a
point you go oooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa hu da yow, ching chang.
So the table would be too short. You have to play snooker with 2 l/6"
balls, pool 2 l/4" billiards 2 3/4". Use a billiard ball on the pool
rail and it jumps, does not work, but using pool balls again changes
the game, it's no longer billiards, can't you see that. Where will
you find a solid red ball, Ok, 2 cb's and a 3, Mic key, mouse....
Then the cloth, pool cloth is too slow, you need 300, which is twice
as fast as 860, then you have to have super fast world class German
artemis intercontinental cushions, which are faster than me, and you
have to heat the slate, which increases the roll by a full 4 more
diamonds. You just can not duplicate the game, on a pool table. Give
it up was my message. Buy a 3-c table, or find one at a pool hall and
play on it.
Hu are you, Ed McCunes team captain and coach? Did you just graduate
from the Monk academy? Let me guess, Ratchet is your illegitimate
love child? You are married to Smorgie and just got back from your
honeymoon in San Francisco?
If you do want to practice billiards then run this drill which teaches
you a variety of billiard straight rail shots, 2 and 3-cushion shots
and it will help your 9 ball game.
DRILL ATTACK THE 9 FOR SHORT RACK WINS.
3 pages, CR, fast Larry Guninger, 9-10-07, all rights reserved,
published in numerous internet sites.
I teach a variety of breaks and one of them is the spin break where I
move the 9 out of the rack and consistently move it towards and
generally close to the bottom left corner as seen from the kitchen. I
make the 9 there about 1 in 10 and hang it as a duck a lot. This sets
it up for a short rack win by attacking it with the cue ball. For
years I practiced straight rail billiards just to perfect these cue
ball control techniques. Then I went into 3-cushion and if you are a
billiard player with both games and the 9 sets up as a duck in any
corner pocket, you consider this a baby billiard you expect to make
over 90% of the time. That is a huge target, the size of a bowling
ball. You can miss it short or long and still pot 9.
There is one down side to this break. If you are playing a savvy
opponent and keep leaving the 9 as a duck, he will begin to attack it
too and if you don't make a ball on the break, he can get at it
first. That is why you must perfect this break so you do make a ball
the majority of the time, even if you have to cheat on how you rack
them and there are several secrets there on how to make the one in the
side or allow the 9 to slide out. If I make a ball on the snap, have
no shot at the one, or I am hooked and can see I might give up cue
ball in hand and give him an easy billiard to win early, I will just
shoot the 9 in, spot it up and hand him the cue ball and say, run on
out if you can. I know, 80% of the time, he can't or won't.
You can find my spin break and study it at my web site www.fastlarrypool.com
In the encyclopedia section.
The problem with the spin break is you lose control of the cue ball.
You don't always get a good shot at the one or two ball, but you do
gain moving the 9 into duck position. If I am making a 2 rail shot
off the one ball up table and come down to pot the 9, game over, it
did not matter I did not pot the one ball.
This is a good method to gamble at 9 ball especially against an
inferior and dumb opponent. Run a couple of racks on him and show how
much better you are than he is and he folds up faster than a $2 blue
light special Kmart card table. You ran off your mark, chump,
sausage, not too smart. But keep whacking in the 9 ball and he will
call you lucky. He will think, he can't keep doing that. That is
what Earl said to me at the BCA show in Kcmo in 93 when I did that to
him 6 times in a row, beating him 6-0. He said, you are the luckiest
SOB I have ever seen. I said, Earl, the more I practice this, the
luckier I get.
Set the 9 as a duck in the same corner pocket each time, the toss out
about 8 balls, get too many out there you shut off ways to attack it.
Your drill is to see and envision a shot off of any ball that can
attack and pot the 9 ball. Do not shoot in rotation, shoot off any
ball and most of the time, make no attempt to even pot it, which is
not your objective, winning early is. Every time you pot an OB, toss
it back out on the table any where. If you don't have a reasonable
shot, take cue ball in hand and set one up.
The majority of players you gamble with, unless he is a roadie or semi
pro, rarely run out consistently from the 1-2 or 3 ball. Yes they
can, but statistically they may pull it off 1 or 2 times out of 10.
That means if they try, they will fail at it 80% of the time and come
up short leaving me a simple 3 ball out. So riding the 9 ball early,
off of the 1-2 or 3 to me is a free ride. So I miss, so what, where
is this chump going, no where and half the time I roll lucky and he
does not get a decent shot.
Learn to attack the 9 using force follows, force draws and 1-2 & 3
rail banks. It's a lot of fun and it improves every facet of your
overall game. I keep doing this until I knock in 15 nine balls and
many times I will knock in 4 or 5 in a row.
Do this drill every day and in a month, you will become a total 9 ball
animal. They will have to lock you in a cage at night and feed you a
stalk of bananas. You will wreck havoc with the bozos you are now
playing. They won't know what hit them.
This is how I played 9 ball when I came up in the early 60's, it was
called fast and loose. You see Fast Eddy doing this in the Hustler
movie, but Turk Baker did not like it and did a war dance on his
thumbs. The moral of that story is hustle people strange to you and
she-yit like that happens. Only gamble with people you know and can
trust to pay and not go violent. Stay away from druggies and drunks.
Do not play gang bangers, you win, they are waiting for you in the
dark parking lot with a gun to take the money back.
Some examples of the kinds of shots you want to work on to perfect.
